JS 100

jamessuckling.com, April 2024

(JS 99-100 points) Wow. This is the essence of Montrose, with blackberry, blackcurrant, crushed stone and earth. I have not tasted a Montrose like this in 42 years of my career. It has a much more vertical nature to it...

jebdunnuck.com, May 2024

(JD 97-100 points) Made from a strict selection of only the best terroirs (terrace 4) around the estate and the oldest vines, the 2023 Château Montrose is a more Cabernet Sauvignon-driven wine than normal and is based on...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2024

(WA 97-100 points) The 2023 Montrose is another brilliant wine from an estate that's now routinely among Bordeaux's very best, year in, year out. A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc...

The Wine Independent, May 2024

(TWI 97-99 points) Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Montrose gallops out of the glass with intense scents of crushed blackcurrants, fresh blackberries, and raspberries along with nuances of licorice, crushed rocks...

Decanter, April 2024

So floral and aromatic, really inviting and welcoming on the nose, more aromatic than some. Smooth and intense, clearly concentrated but supple and bouncy, there’s movement to this, it’s not strict. So precise, and...

janeanson.com, April 2024

Gorgeously dark and vibrant fruit, with gunsmoke and campfire, concentrated cassis and blackberry pastille, grilled almond, saffron and pomegrante, luscious but measured, showing the inky character that seems to be at the...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, May 2024

(96-98 points) The complex perfume displays its flowers, crushed rock, black raspberry, and currants with just a swirl or two. There is freshness, with a sense of purity, lift, and elegance on the palate. The wine is...

Vinous, April 2024

(VN 96-98 points) The 2023 Montrose is focused on the original terroir of the estate, known as Terrace 4, located in front of the river. It comprises 45 hectares, around 12 to 15 hectares less than previous vintages so...

Chateau Montrose is situated five kilometers north of Pauillac in Saint-Estephe, on a very well-drained and ideally exposed gravelly outcrop which runs for over a kilometer along the Gironde estuary. The 95-hectare (234-acre) vineyard surrounds the chateau, the winery, and the outbuildings, planted to a mix of grape varieties with Cabernet Sauvignon making up 60% of the vines, with parcels of Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot (2%).

Succeeding three generations of the Charmolue family, Martin and Olivier Bouygues acquired Chateau Montrose in 2006. Acquiring a love of Montrose wines from their father, and keenly aware of the potential of its unique terroir, they decided to invest in their passion. Under their management, Montrose entered the 21st century with a spectacular reconstruction.

This great, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon wine is typical of the Saint-Estephe appellation. With rigorous selection in both the vineyard and the winery, Chateau Montrose is structured and tannic, yet possesses the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classe. With time, it develops a delicate and complex bouquet.

The best vintages of Montrose are exceptionally long-lived, with certain vintages (1921, 1929, 1982, 1990, and 2009) considered to be legendary. The blend is roughly equivalent to the vineyard plantings - 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, with the balance from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is matured for 18 months in 60% new oak barrels.

The 2023 Montrose Bordeaux Blend from the renowned St Estephe sub-region in Bordeaux, France, is a highly acclaimed red wine that has received exceptional reviews from numerous wine critics. This vintage, produced by Montrose, showcases a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc, and is noted for its deep complexity and refined structure.

James Suckling awarded this wine a perfect score, describing it as "the essence of Montrose" and highlighting its "blackberry, blackcurrant, crushed stone and earth" notes. He emphasized its "muscular structure and intensity," calling it a "new era for Montrose" (jamessuckling.com, 4/22/2024).

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate echoed the sentiment with another perfect score, praising its "aromas of cassis and wild berries mingled with lilac, violet, and pencil shavings." The review by William Kelley noted the wine's "full-bodied, deep and layered" character and its "long, resonant finish" (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 4/26/2024).

Vinous also provided a glowing review with a score of 98 points, emphasizing the wine's "intense and focused bouquet" and "very pure" palate with "fine-boned tannins" and "pitch-perfect acidity" (Vinous, 4/29/2024). Neal Martin described it as "one of the vintage’s finest contributions from the Left Bank."

Jane Anson awarded the wine 98 points, noting its "gorgeously dark and vibrant fruit" and "inky character." She highlighted the wine’s "organic conversion" and mentioned that it is the first vintage made only from the Terrace 4 section of the vineyard (janeanson.com, 4/15/2024).

Decanter also gave the wine 98 points, appreciating its "floral and aromatic" nose and "smooth and intense" palate. The review praised its "excellent weight and balance of acidity," describing it as "classy and comfortable" (Decanter, 4/8/2024).

Jeff Leve rated the wine between 96-98 points, highlighting its "complex perfume" and "sense of purity, lift, and elegance on the palate" (TheWineCellarInsider.com, 5/4/2024).

Jeb Dunnuck gave it a perfect score, noting its "more plush, deep, opulent" nature and comparing it to the 2010 and 2016 vintages. He described it as potentially "the wine of the vintage" (jebdunnuck.com, 5/8/2024).

Finally, The Wine Independent rated it 99 points, emphasizing its "intense scents of crushed blackcurrants, fresh blackberries, and raspberries" and its "impressive tension and tight-knit black and red berry flavors" (The Wine Independent, 5/7/2024).

Overall, the 2023 Montrose Bordeaux Blend is celebrated for its depth, complexity, and refined structure, making it a standout wine in the 2023 vintage.
