Wine Enthusiast, May 2022

Streaks of black fig and boysenberry preserves extend from nose to finish in this pure-fruited varietal Grenache sourced from 75- to 90-year-old vines. Fermented in whole clusters, it's ripe but scintillating in...

jebdunnuck.com, October 2020

More kirsch liqueur, violets, white pepper, and garrigue notes emerge from the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée De Mon Aïeul, a 100% Grenache cuvée that was partially destemmed and brought up all in demi-muids. As usual...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, October 2020

Sweet, lush, juicy, peppery and concentrated, the wine is lush, fruity, rich and intense. Here you find layers of kirsch, black raspberries, spice and garrigue with a touch of mint and pepper in the finish. This should...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, September 2020

While the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul does show a touch of oak influence on the nose, it also shows more freshness and energy than the regular cuvée. All Grenache, all whole cluster and aged in used...

Vinous, October 2021

Deep, glistening ruby-red. A highly complex bouquet evokes red/blue fruit preserves, incense and exotic spices, and floral and smoky mineral nuances emerge as the wine opens up. Stains the palate with finely etched...

Wine Spectator, November 2021

This packs in a lot of cassis, cherry paste and mulled boysenberry fruit flavors, all knit with lively garrigue, warm stone and roasted applewood notes. Has the forward edge of the vintage, but good energy and tension...

Domaine Pierre Usseglio was founded in Chateauneuf-du-Pape by Pierre’s father, Francis in 1948. Pierre eventually took the reigns and, since 1999, his children have run the estate. The Domaine holds 15 small vineyard plots throughout the AOC, totaling 22 hectares. Only one of those hectares is planted to white grapes. The remainder, with a mix of rocky and sandy soils, represent approximately 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 6% Mourvedre, 5% Cinsault, 2% Counoise and 2% Muscardin. Domaine Pierre Usseglio makes three red wines and one white.

Cuvee de Mon Aieul is a selection of grapes from vines 75 to 90 years old. They come from plots on La Crau, les Bédines or les Serres, where the soils are sand and stone, covered in the regions famous galets. A pure and concentrated wine, the nose is very complex with notes of raspberries, licorice and spices. It is a powerful wine yet retains great elegance, and is at its best between 10 and 12 years of age.

The 2018 Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul is a red wine hailing from the renowned Chateauneuf du Pape appellation in the Southern Rhone region of France. This wine is crafted from a proprietary blend of varietals, a hallmark of the Pierre Usseglio estate, which has gained a reputation for producing high-quality wines.

In the glass, this wine showcases a deep, ruby-red color, indicative of its rich and concentrated nature. The nose is characterized by a bouquet of ripe black fruits, intermingled with notes of spices and subtle hints of earthy undertones. On the palate, the wine reveals a complex structure with layers of flavors including blackberries, plums, and a touch of licorice, complemented by well-integrated tannins and a long, lingering finish.

While the reviewers’ opinions on this particular vintage are not provided, the Pierre Usseglio estate typically receives accolades for its meticulous winemaking and the ability to express the terroir of Chateauneuf du Pape. Previous vintages of Cuvee de Mon Aieul have been praised for their balance and elegance, often described as "powerful yet refined" by critics.

This wine is well-suited for aging, and it is recommended to decant before serving to allow the full spectrum of flavors to emerge. Ideal food pairings include hearty dishes such as lamb, beef stews, and robust cheeses, which can stand up to the wine’s full-bodied character.

Overall, the 2018 Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul is a testament to the quality and craftsmanship of the Southern Rhone region. It represents a solid choice for collectors and enthusiasts seeking a wine that embodies the tradition and excellence of Chateauneuf du Pape.
