The Wine Independent, February 2023

Saint-Pierre 2018 has a deep garnet-purple color. It gives up compelling scents of fresh blackcurrants, black cherry compote, and boysenberries, plus touches of star anise, cardamom, and incense, with a waft of wood...

janeanson.com, February 2022

Creamy blackberry and loganberry fruits with touches of brioche, and flaky pastry. Young, needs time, still in the plump early fruit phase, more exuberant than a young Saint Pierre in most vintages, but this will close...

Deep in color, the wine kicks off with flowers, smoky currants, spice, espresso and cigar box notes. From there, the richly textured dark red fruits provides layers of lusciously textured, fresh berries and toasty oak...

Sports a beam of cassis, plum puree and blackberry sauce running through the middle while roasted applewood, violet and sweet tobacco notes run along the edges. Everything meets and then extends through the finish, with...

Wine Enthusiast, May 2021

This firm wine shows layers of tannins as well as the warm, rich black fruits typical of the vintage. Black-currant flavors along with the tannins give a dense wine with aging potential. Drink from 2026. - Roger Voss

The smallest of the Saint-Julien crus, Chateau Saint-Pierre was first established in the 17th century, although a number of legacies subsequently led to the property being split up and dispersed. In 1982, through a combination of good luck and tenacity, current proprietor Henri Martin, who owned neighboring Chateau Gloria, was able to put the estate back together the way it had been in 1855, the year of the famous classification.

Ever since, thanks to the investments made by the owners, Saint-Pierre has been acknowledged as a perfect representative of the Grands Crus Classes of the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation. The estate vineyards, located in the middle of the commune of Beychevelle. These, cover 17 hectares which are planted with 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc, on soils of Gunzian gravel over clay and sand, and an average vine age of 50 years.

The grapes for Saint-Pierre’s red wine are picked by hand and vinified in the traditional way in heat-regulated stainless steel vats. The wine then spends 14 to 16 months being aged in casks, half of which are replaced every year. The wine is typically a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.

The 2018 Chateau Saint Pierre is a Bordeaux blend from the St Julien sub-region of Bordeaux, France. This red wine, produced by Chateau Saint Pierre and sealed with a cork, boasts an alcohol content of 14.5%. Composed primarily of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot, it presents a robust and complex profile worthy of the high praise it has received from several esteemed wine critics.

James Suckling awarded the wine a score of 94, noting its "aromas of blackberries, currants, dried earth, coffee, and chocolate orange" and highlighting its "firm, tight-grained tannins" and "fine texture" (jamessuckling.com, 1/26/2021). He recommends trying it from 2024 onwards.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also gave the 2018 Saint Pierre a score of 95. Reviewer Lisa Perrotti-Brown described it as bursting "from the glass with a glorious perfume of kirsch, blackcurrant pastilles, black raspberries and cedar chest," and praised its "beautifully knit freshness" and "long and perfumed" finish (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 3/31/2021). She suggests that it will benefit from a few more years of aging to allow the oak to marry with the fruit, recommending a drinking window that extends for 20+ years.

Jeff Leve, from TheWineCellarInsider.com, matched this score, highlighting its "richly textured dark red fruits" and "balanced, elegant and fresh" nature. He noted its complex bouquet of "flowers, smoky currants, spice, espresso, and cigar box notes" (TheWineCellarInsider.com, 3/9/2021).

Jeb Dunnuck, awarding it 94+ points, noted its "almost Pauillac-like stature and structure," praising its "powerful bouquet of black currants, lead pencil, spicy oak, and chocolate" (jebdunnuck.com, 3/11/2021). He suggests it needs another 7-8 years before it reaches its peak and will keep for 2-3 decades.

Wine Spectator’s JM also rated it 95, describing it as featuring a "beam of cassis, plum puree and blackberry sauce" with "notes of roasted applewood, violet and sweet tobacco" (Wine Spectator, 3/31/2021). Best from 2024 through 2038.

Wine Enthusiast’s Roger Voss gave it a slightly lower score of 92, focusing on its "layers of tannins" and "warm, rich black fruits," suggesting it has great aging potential and will be best from 2026 (Wine Enthusiast, 5/1/2021).

Lastly, Jane Anson also scored it 95, noting its "creamy blackberry and loganberry fruits with touches of brioche and flaky pastry" and recommending a full ten years to reveal its true potential (janeanson.com, 2/3/2022).

Overall, the 2018 Chateau Saint Pierre is a well-regarded wine with excellent aging potential and a complex, layered profile.
