jamessuckling.com, September 2022

This has a polished and complex nose of poached plums, dark cherries, tea leaves, graphite, milk chocolate and a touch of caramel. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm yet creamy tannins. Caressing, seductive and ripe...

Wine Enthusiast, July 2024

Inky garnet to the eye, this wine has a bouquet of blackberry and bittersweet chocolate. It simultaneously offers refinement and power on the palate, with plush tannins that increase in volume and drift away, while purple...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, January 2023

I had already tasted the 2013 Único from magnum in a vertical tasting of all the magnums ever produced and was quite impressed by it (and the still unreleased 2014 that should be available in 2024). 2013 saw a rainy...

Wine & Spirits, April 2023

The 2013 season was relatively mild and dry, at least until harvest, when the rains came on from the end of September through mid-October. The 100 acres of vines for Unico grow on a north-facing hillside, the remnants of...

Vega Sicilia, one of Spain’s most famous and legendary wine estates, is located in Ribera del Duero, in the Valbuena de Duero in the province of Valladolid, Castilla y Leon. Founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lacanda y Chaves, who brought cuttings of Bordelaise varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, and Pinot Noir from Bordeaux, the estate changed hands several times before it was purchased in 1982 by the Alvarez family. This marked the beginning of one of the most prosperous periods in the history of the company.

A large estate of nearly 1,000 hectares, just 210 hectares are planted to vines which have been grown on the Vega Sicilia estate for over a hundred years. The vines, with an average age of 35 years, are planted to three varieties: Tempranillo (80%), Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and are used to produce Vega Sicilia Unico and Valbuena, as well as wine for their sister property, Bodegas Alion.

Founded on an unwavering commitment to quality and the pursuit of excellence, Vega Sicilia’s guiding principle is that “the best wine is still to be made”.

Unico is Vega Sicilia’s flagship wine, made from varying proportions of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each provides a differentiating factor that makes the wine great in every vintage.

Unico remains true to a clear and well-defined style, with an inimitable character, elegance, and strength. It has a unique and timeless quality that has elevated it among the aristocracy of the great classic wines. Infinitely complex, the wine is silky and elegant, with an aging capacity that only a handful of wines in the world can claim.

The 2013 Vega Sicilia Unico is a truly exceptional wine that embodies the best of Spanish winemaking. With its rich history and dedication to quality, Vega Sicilia has once again crafted a masterpiece in this vintage.

This red wine is a proprietary blend, carefully crafted from a combination of 97% Tinto Fino and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are sourced from the prestigious Ribera Del Duero sub-region in the Castilla y Leon region of Spain. The 2013 vintage was a challenging one, with a rainy harvest. However, Vega Sicilia's meticulous approach paid off, resulting in a wine that is subtle, elegant, and fresh.

The 2013 Unico has a beautiful red color that is captivating in the glass. On the nose, it offers an aromatic and floral bouquet, with notes of black plum, dried mint, spice box, and graphite. These aromas give way to a palate that is complex, silky, and precise. The wine is well-balanced, with a pH of 3.78 and 5.2 grams of acidity, showcasing its freshness and finesse.

Renowned wine critic Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded the 2013 Unico an impressive score of 97 points. Parker describes the wine as clean and fresh, with very fine tannins. He notes that it is a big surprise for the vintage and one of the finest Unicos in recent years. The Wine Advocate also mentions that the 2013 Unico saw maturation in 225-liter barrels and 22,000-liter oak vats, highlighting the winemaker's commitment to quality.

Wine Spectator also gave the 2013 Unico high praise, awarding it a score of 96 points. The publication describes the wine as rich and savory, with hints of leather, mesquite smoke, and fresh earth. It praises the wine's firm, chalky tannins and finely woven profile, showcasing its finesse and overall balance.

With its exceptional quality and rave reviews from top critics, the 2013 Vega Sicilia Unico is a must-try wine for any wine enthusiast. This wine is drinking beautifully now but also has the potential to age gracefully for many years to come. Enjoy it now or cellar it for a special occasion—either way, you won't be disappointed.
