Champagne Billecart-Salmon is an independent and family-owned champagne house situated in the charming village of Mareuil-sur-Ay in the heart of Champagne. It was founded in 1818 after the marriage of Nicolas Francois Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon.

Since then, for almost 200 years, every member of the Billecart family has continued to stand by their oath of giving priority to quality and striving for excellence. Today, the 6th generation is represented by Francois and Antoine Roland-Billecart, who lead this independent house with the support of their father, Jean Roland-Billecart. The firm owns 74 acres of its own vines and purchases grapes from growers comprising another 346 acres. Ninety percent of the fruit for Billecart comes from 40 crus within a 20-mile radius of Epernay.

The Billecart portfolio includes the Brut Reserve, Brut Rose, Extra Brut, Demi-Sec, Brut Sous Bois, Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru, Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart, and the ultimate expression for the House, the vintage Le Clos Saint Hilaire, a blanc de noirs Champagne sourced from a tiny plot planted in 1964.

The winery employs sustainable viticulture practices, without the use of pesticides and herbicides, and the wines are aged in oak in Billecart's limestone cellars.

The 2013 Billecart-Salmon Vintage Brut is a Champagne blend that hails from the renowned Champagne region in France. This wine, presented in a 3000ml format and classified as a white wine, showcases a blend of 62% Pinot Noir, 24% Chardonnay, and 14% Pinot Meunier. The wine was disgorged in November 2021 and has a dosage of 3g/L, indicating a relatively low sugar content.

James Suckling awarded this vintage a score of 93 points, praising its "creamy and fresh" profile. He noted aromas of croissants, brioche, lemon curd, white cocoa, and marmalade, with "silky bubbles" and "lovely pastry notes" that lead to an "elegant finish." Suckling also highlighted the wine's potential for aging, suggesting it could be enjoyed now or held for future enjoyment.

Wine Spectator rated the 2013 Billecart-Salmon Vintage Brut slightly higher, with a score of 94 points. The publication described it as a "vibrant Champagne, finely balanced and lacy in texture," and commended it for serving as an "elegant canvas for layered flavors" such as yellow peach, chopped almond, cherry, toast point, and preserved lemon. The tasting notes also mentioned "minerally smoke, chalk and spice notes" that play on the finish. Wine Spectator recommended drinking this Champagne now through 2030.

Wine Enthusiast also gave this vintage a score of 94 points. Reviewer Roger Voss described it as a "finely textured Champagne," noting its dryness and youth, along with its significant potential for aging. Voss pointed out the wine's minerality and texture, which "give both tension and richness," and suggested that it needs to soften further to reach its peak, recommending it be ready to drink from 2025 onward.

Overall, the 2013 Billecart-Salmon Vintage Brut is a well-regarded Champagne with high scores from multiple reviewers. Its blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier offers a complex profile with both immediate appeal and aging potential, making it a versatile choice for Champagne enthusiasts.
