The Wine Independent, September 2023

The 2010 Montrose is composed of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a lot of swirling and coaxing to bring out notes of baked plums...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, September 2022

Young, but not quite primary, there is such a wealth of ripe, sweet, black, and red fruit, it is hard not to be seduced by the endless layers of flavor, fruit, and tannins on the palate. This is one of those wines where...

Vinous, May 2024

The 2010 Montrose is one of the highlights of the Icons of Bordeaux dinner. It has a show-stopper nose with powerful, intense, mineral-rich black fruit, becoming quite floral with aeration. Potpourri hints complement...

janeanson.com, June 2021

Still extremely young, feels significantly more closed than the 1996, with a greater emphasis on spicy black pepper and cassis, and still firm tannins. You feel the tannins pressing in on the close of play, whereas in the...

jebdunnuck.com, May 2023

While I have a slight preference for the 2009, the 2010 Château Montrose is an undeniably great wine that has everything you could want from this terroir, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it merit even a higher rating...

Decanter, April 2024

Softly fragrant and inviting, with cool, fresh blue fruit. Juicy and intense. Broad and big shouldered tannin-wise, but with a sleek, focused, precise centre. A complex wine that hasn't fully hit its stride: has muscle...

jamessuckling.com, November 2013

A perfumed and pure Montrose, with lots of currants, berries and spices that evolve to chocolate and light coffee. Full body, with super racy tannins and bright and clean finish. Very fine and structured. A balance and...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, December 2023

(97+ points) One of the most youthful and powerful wines in this tasting is the 2010 Montrose, a year when only 52% of the estate's production went into the grand vin. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of crème de...

Wine Spectator, March 2013

Rock solid, displaying a dense core of plum, steeped currant and braised fig fruit, with racy charcoal and ganache notes. Intensely chalky, offering flesh and refinement to match the bracing minerality, this shows hints...

Wine Enthusiast, May 2013

This is such an elegant wine that has all the structure of the vintage. Surrounding the tannins, the wine is sweet and ripe, with smokiness from the wood. It’s powerful, elegant and sophisticated with a strong sense of...

95+ Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. Chateau Montrose can be so curmudgeonly in its youth that in blind tastings, it can seem like appraising an ogre in a beauty contest. That's what happened here...

Chateau Montrose is situated five kilometers north of Pauillac in Saint-Estephe, on a very well-drained and ideally exposed gravelly outcrop which runs for over a kilometer along the Gironde estuary. The 95-hectare (234-acre) vineyard surrounds the chateau, the winery, and the outbuildings, planted to a mix of grape varieties with Cabernet Sauvignon making up 60% of the vines, with parcels of Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot (2%).

Succeeding three generations of the Charmolue family, Martin and Olivier Bouygues acquired Chateau Montrose in 2006. Acquiring a love of Montrose wines from their father, and keenly aware of the potential of its unique terroir, they decided to invest in their passion. Under their management, Montrose entered the 21st century with a spectacular reconstruction.

This great, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon wine is typical of the Saint-Estephe appellation. With rigorous selection in both the vineyard and the winery, Chateau Montrose is structured and tannic, yet possesses the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classe. With time, it develops a delicate and complex bouquet.

The best vintages of Montrose are exceptionally long-lived, with certain vintages (1921, 1929, 1982, 1990, and 2009) considered to be legendary. The blend is roughly equivalent to the vineyard plantings - 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, with the balance from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is matured for 18 months in 60% new oak barrels.

The 2010 Montrose Bordeaux Blend, produced by Montrose in the esteemed St Estephe sub-region of Bordeaux, France, is a red wine lauded for its complexity and aging potential. This vintage is composed of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, with an alcohol content of 14.0%.

The wine has garnered high praise from numerous professional reviewers, with scores ranging from 95 to a perfect 100. The blend's structure and potential for aging have been frequently highlighted across reviews.

Andrew Frieden from JJ Buckley awarded the wine a score of 98, emphasizing its potential for future development. He noted, "Blackberry and cassis liquor dominate the nose while violet lavender creosote and fresh turned earth are beginning to develop." Frieden also pointed out the wine's "precision and power" on the palate, suggesting it will be an intriguing comparison to the 2009 vintage over time.

Neal Martin’s Wine Journal gave it a 95+, describing it as a "classic Montrose with a persistent tarry aftertaste." Martin also commented on its introspective nose, saying it "tells you to bugger off and not come back for at least a decade."

Wine Spectator's review, scoring the wine at 97, highlighted its "dense core of plum, steeped currant and braised fig fruit, with racy charcoal and ganache notes." The review further noted its "intensely chalky" texture and "riveting finish."

Vinous' Antonio Galloni awarded the wine a perfect score of 100, calling it "insanely beautiful." He praised its "explosive energy" and "soaring floral and mineral notes," asserting that it benefits from aeration and is a wine to be thrilled by.

James Suckling, also giving a score of 97, described it as "a perfumed and pure Montrose," noting the evolution of flavors from currants and berries to chocolate and light coffee. He appreciated its "super racy tannins" and "bright and clean finish."

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, with a score of 97+, emphasized its "powerful tannic chassis" and the need for patience, while Decanter echoed similar sentiments with a score of 98, recommending it be opened for five to six hours if drinking soon but ideally put away for another few years.

Jeff Leve's review on TheWineCellarInsider.com, scoring it at 99, highlighted its "wealth of ripe, sweet, black, and red fruit," describing it as a wine that "seemingly never wants to stop."

Jane Anson, who scored it 98, noted its "spicy black pepper and cassis" with "tannins pressing in on the close of play," indicating a long future ahead.

Jeb Dunnuck gave it a 98, preferring the 2009 slightly more but acknowledging it has "everything you could want from this terroir," predicting it may merit even a higher rating in another decade.

Finally, The Wine Independent also awarded it a perfect 100, highlighting its "formidable structure of very firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness" and a finish that is "long, long, long."

In summary, the 2010 Montrose is a highly acclaimed Bordeaux Blend that promises exceptional aging potential and complexity, with reviewers consistently praising its structure, depth, and evolving flavors.
